Alternatives: Chipped Rubber Riding Surfaces
An alternative riding surface is chipped rubber.
Moist sand can freeze solid in cold weather, creating a hard slippery surface which is unsuitable for excercising horses. A chipped rubber riding surface is less susceptible to freezing and protexts against wind loss.
Chipped rubber granules should preferably be graded from 14mm to 25mm, and magnetically separated to remove any metal remnants. A 50mm layer to cover a 40m x 20m arena weighs approximately 21 tonnes, and should be placed above a 100mm layer of Manege Sand as an alternative riding surface.
